Helvetica Neue - How the Heck Do You Say It?
By marie on August 13, 2010
One of my favorite go-to fonts is the entire Helvetica Neue Family. It's so funny how many people have no clue how to say "neue", and everyone has their own version. I decided to get to the bottom of this for my own peace of mind.
The proper pronunciation phonetically, is "Noy-a".
A short & sweet history, is that the original Helvetica font family was redesigned in 1983, refining and adding to the original. Neue is the German word for new, so the obvious new name would be known as Helvetica Neue.

So... why was it redesigned, and what was so new?
The main improvements include:
- Many new variants in weights
- New numbering system to identify the different weights
- Refining the characters so the have better readability
- Improved punctuation
There's a fun, brief history on my favorite font. And now I can be sure I'm saying it properly too. Bonus.
