If you've used the Drupal Imagecache module, you know it's a great tool. However one thing that has always annoyed me is the inability to change the background color of cropped images.

This is a step-by-step tutorial on setting up a basic, fresh Drupal installation, based on a custom design theme that you have created. This is intended for newbies and designers, and includes some tips that you need to know if you haven't worked with Drupal before.  I'm also included the recommended basic modules for any Drupal site.  

Here we go...

1. On your web server, if you have access to your php.ini, increase your PHP Memory Limit to at least 36MB (or ask your web host to do this for you)

Many of my clients run their site on Drupal, and when I come into the process after the theme has been built I'm always disappointed to see a poorly patched together custom theme.  Creating a custom design theme in Drupal is simple and one of my favorite things about Drupal, however there are many ways to get to the goal, not all good ones. In my experience there is one best method... create a Zen sub-theme.  

I've been working in Drupal regularly for the past few years now, and with every new build I find myself installing the same base modules over and over.  I've come to the conclusion that every Drupal install can benefit from these basic must-have modules in their arsenal.

This is my personal current holy grail list for a generic Drupal install.  For more feature specific functions I have a whole other set of favorites which I'll post soon.  For now here goes...
